VH Designs was the secret artistic hand behind the stunning décor that painted the event in rich Wildcat purple and lush palms when Northwestern University’s 167th commencement took over Chicago’s iconic United Center on June 15, 2025,
A Botanical Oasis Among Granite and Seats
Walking into the colossal arena, guests and graduates were greeted by towering potted areca palms, creating an unexpected sense of lush serenity amidst the sea of chairs. Interspersed among them were delicate clusters of purple allium, their spherical blooms providing a pop of color amongst the palms. Accents of Wildcat purple orchids seamlessly wove the University’s signature color into every arrangement.
These installations transformed the United Center’s industrial interior into a warm, immersive celebration space, elevating the commencement atmosphere from grand to grandiose.
Spaces of Celebration
While the main ceremony unfolded under the bright lights of the United Center, VH Designs’ flowers and greenery also adorned several Evanston campus venues used for smaller events. Spaces like the Welsh-Ryan Arena and other campus-wide convocation sites were just as special.
Spotlight Moment: Steve Carell’s Commencement Address
Comedy legend Steve Carell, class of 2025’s commencement speaker, turned the event into a lively celebration framed by our palm installations. In his address, Carell offered heartfelt advice around kindness, community, and self-care, famously reminding graduates, “Kindness isn’t a weakness – it is a very potent strength” something we pride ourselves on at VH. Mid‑speech, he led a spontaneous dance break to grooving with graduates and faculty—transforming the United Center into a real‑life Café Disco just like in The Office.
This blend of humor, wisdom, and spontaneity—set against the backdrop of VH Designs’ elevated décor—made it an unforgettable celebration of the Class of 2025.
